From the first moment that we walked out of the train station and walked (approximately) 100 meters down to our hotel straight across from the Duomo, we knew that we were going to love Florence. And we did! We had NO problems getting around. Unlike Rome, our hotel was right in the heart of the city and we could walk to every site. We came in to town on a Monday, so all the museums were closed. We used today to meet Sue (the lady that Granny found that helped her find out where mom lived when she went to school here) and thank her in person for taking the time to write Granny. She was so nice and helpful. She gave us some tips on what were the "must sees" in Florence, gave us directions to internet cafes and cheap places to eat, and even gave us some tips on our upcoming trip to Venice. I'm so glad we stopped by there. We were also able to see classrooms where my mom studied and she gave us a tour of the VERY small campus. We spent most of that evening wandering around and enjoying the beautiful town. We had dinner at a lovely restaurant and spent the rest of the night looking down from our hotel window at the Duomo and the people below.
The next day is when we went sight-seeing. We went inside the Duomo and saw the beautiful ceiling inside, saw David at the academia, and topped off our day with the Ufizzi museum. It was a lovely day full of culture and amazing things. I think the thing that I was mostly excited for was the "Birth of Venus" painting. It was as amazing as all of the pictures of it depict, but so much more so looking at it with just a few inches separating it from me. We weren't supposed to take pics, but I had to sneak one of it. It was an amazing museum.
The last day was spent looking around at churches, different sights that showed the move from Gothic to Renaissance, and enjoying Florence. That evening we watched the sunset from the Ponte Vecchio and then the rest of the night in the Roman piazza. We both didn't want to leave. Too short of a time for such an amazing place! Next time we'll come here for longer.

What a neat experience to get to see where your mom went to school and the people she knew. How fun! Dont worry about getting home to soon-its cold and snowy and rainy here. Promise you arent missing out on anything!
I did not know your mom went to school here. No wonder you have wanted to go to Europe for so long. That must have been amazing Kate! Glad you didn't have to heave your luggage around here, and that you could just focus on the sites n stuff.
